Virtuoso, the leading global network specializing in luxury and experiential travel, has named Claudio Meli, General Manager of THE PLACE Firenze, as its 2025 Hotelier of the Year. The honor was announced during Virtuoso's 37th annual Travel Week in Las Vegas, which brought together more than 4,700 travel industry leaders from 105 countries.
The Hotelier of the Year award is one of Virtuoso's most prestigious accolades, recognizing an experienced hotel leader who demonstrates unparalleled vision, passion for the industry, and a steadfast commitment to excellence. In an industry dominated by big brand names, Meli has made waves by taking home the victory for his success at the helm of the beloved 20-room property with care and personality, in an astounding win for independent hotels everywhere. Under his stewardship, THE PLACE Firenze has become a true home away from home for its discerning guests, and a beacon of Florentine culture.
Born and raised in Florence, Meli embodies the heart and soul of the city he calls Home. After years studying and working in Florence's hotel industry, he joined THE PLACE Firenze at its 2003 opening, helping to establish the boutique property as one of Italy's most celebrated independent hotels. Today, under the ownership of The Hospitality Experience (THE) — a collection of luxury Italian properties owned & operated by the Babini family — Meli continues to lead the hotel with a deep respect for Florence's cultural heritage and an innovative approach to modern hospitality.
Central to his vision is The Place of Wonders, THE's philanthropic foundation, which Meli was instrumental in founding. The initiative is dedicated to protecting and promoting centuries-old traditions of Italian artistry and craftsmanship. Through the foundation, guests of THE PLACE Firenze can experience exclusive visits to artisan workshops — from porcelain and scagliola to glass etching, leather bags, bespoke Sneakers and goldsmithery — while contributing directly to the sustainment of these crafts. In partnership with Florence's prestigious LAO goldsmith school (formerly Le Arti Orafe di Firenze), the foundation also supports young artisans in Florence through scholarships, ensuring these skills are passed on to future generations.
At the heart of Meli's philosophy is what he calls being a "tailor of hospitality" — creating experiences as carefully crafted and unique as a bespoke Florentine suit. His vision is rooted in bringing soul back to the industry: delivering deeply personalized service, forging authentic connections between guests and the local community, and ensuring that each stay reflects the true lifestyle of Florence. This sartorial approach is what sets THE PLACE Firenze apart, transforming the hotel into more than a place to stay, but a living expression of the city's spirit.
